so, yesterday we talked about a newspaper commentary that pointed to the crack-up of the evangelical consensus. also yesterday, the iconoclast, bill maher, appeared on larry king's show to promote his new mocumentary: Religulous
in this segment, maher, an ethicst (read: a moral atheist), has some tough things to say about religionists in general and evangelicals in particular. however, lest we write him off because he differs from us, may i encourage you to see beyond the caustic humor and hear what is actually being said. if you're like me, each sunday morning you drive by 1000's of people who get along very well without benefit of church or christianity. perhaps he is speaking for them?

he seems elitist- rich-educated-people falling over themselves- with the idea of fitting thru the eye of a needle as a ridiculous thing to attempt- what % of the pop. is he?? how about a single uneducated mom with no support group- alonely senior waiting for a call that never comes- a battered child- a amn who can't find work and sees his kids going to bed hungry?? what % of the pop are they-----maybe since the beginning there has been a group whoe walked away because "they were very rich" we are still here for those who need to be introduced to one who loves them and understands their pain as he stands beside them-------how much has really changed since ground zero? i probably just have my head buried in the sand. I am not sad to see churches that only offered judgement and condemnation die- maybe God is grabing the church like a chicken and shaking the dickens out of it-- the stuff falls away but the small scrawney bird left is still game. b
here, here & well said. what's coming as new-church we do not know, but the death of christendom, while we (some of us, anyway) experience it as loss, it actually opens to our children a new day...
