missional church

it is possible that part of the death of christendom will mean a deep pruning of the church. it may mean that the grief of exile (go here & here & here) includes the loss of friends and those who can no longer stand the cognitive dissonance between what christendom claims and what the culture allows. will those of us who have been tasked with leadership -- which means saying the last "amen" at the funeral of the church of the west -- be willing to withstand the "downsizing" of the church through its marginalization and the sunset of its values without succumbing to despair at the loss of all we love and toss in the towel as well.  but the institutional church of christendom is dead, and only a newly formed missional church, a church very lean and very tough, will come out of the ashes. criteria for success will of necessity shift from warm bodies filling a pew to willing servants on mission in the community incarnating a public gospel...
