finally, there is another form of ancient pray that i have found to be very powerful indeed. it's called centering prayer (go here and here)
i was introduced to it in a book called, Open Mind Open Heart: The Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel. this was written by thomas keating.
in this ancient prayer form, fr. keating teaches the use of a sacred word, that allows us to become internally and intentionally focused on God, while at the same time allowing our spirit to become quiet and restful.
this is a precursor to contemplative prayer which has a rich history, but which is very difficult to accomplish without a spiritual director.
